Understanding The Registration Journey

The registration process for internationally qualified nurses is managed by the Nursing Council of New Zealand and requirements may change over time.

In general, internationally qualified nurses are required to:

  • Have their documents verified through TruMerit
  • Meet Nursing Council registration requirements
  • Complete the Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand programme
  • Complete fitness-to-practise checks
  • Meet English language requirements where applicable
  • Complete any competence assessment requirements determined by the Nursing Council

Because every application is assessed individually, requirements may differ between applicants.

We recommend referring directly to the Nursing Council of New Zealand for the most current registration requirements.

We can help you:

  • Understand the New Zealand healthcare system
  • Understand nursing autonomy and accountability

  • Build confidence in workplace communication

Frequently asked questions

Can you help me become registered in New Zealand?

We can provide general guidance and help you understand the process, however registration decisions and requirements are determined by the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Is this suitable if I have only recently arrived in New Zealand?

Absolutely. Many nurses seek support early in their transition to better understand the New Zealand healthcare system and employment landscape.

Can NursePathway NZ help me complete my Nursing Council application?

No. We do not complete registration applications on behalf of nurses. However, we can help you understand the process, prepare professionally, and navigate your next steps with greater confidence.

Can you help me understand the New Zealand healthcare system?

Yes. Many internationally qualified nurses find the structure of New Zealand healthcare different from their home country. We can provide guidance on healthcare settings, nursing roles, professional expectations, and common career pathways.

Can you help me prepare for an OSCE or competence assessment?

We can provide general guidance on New Zealand nursing practice expectations and professional preparation. However, we are not an accredited competence assessment provider and do not assess competence on behalf of the Nursing Council.

What if English is not my first language?

Many internationally qualified nurses successfully transition into New Zealand nursing practice. Building confidence with professional communication, documentation, and interview skills can be an important part of your preparation.

Can you help me find a nursing job?

We do not provide recruitment services or guarantee employment. However, we can help you strengthen your applications, prepare for interviews, and better understand employer expectations.

"What is the biggest challenge internationally qualified nurses face?"

Many internationally qualified nurses tell us the biggest challenge is not clinical nursing knowledge—it is understanding the New Zealand healthcare system, communication expectations, documentation standards, professional accountability, and workplace culture.
