Returning to Practice After a Career Break?

Returning to nursing after time away from practice can feel overwhelming. Whether you've taken time off for family commitments, travel, study, health reasons, or another career opportunity, understanding what steps are required to return safely and confidently can be challenging.

At NursePathway NZ, we provide guidance, coaching, and practical support to help registered and enrolled nurses understand the Nursing Council requirements, identify their next steps, and navigate the return-to-practice process with confidence.

You don't need to figure it out alone.

Who This Support Is For

This service may be suitable for:

Returning to Practice Can Feel Daunting

Many nurses considering a return to practice ask themselves:

  • "Am I still eligible to practise?"
  • "What does the Nursing Council require?"
  • "Has too much time passed?"
  • "Do I need additional education?"
  • "How do I regain my confidence?"
  • "Will employers consider me after a long break?"
  • "What if nursing has changed since I last worked?"

These concerns are common and completely understandable.

The good news is that many nurses successfully return to practice every year. The key is understanding your requirements and developing a clear plan.

Understanding Returning to Practice Requirements

The Nursing Council of New Zealand determines individual return-to-practice requirements based on your circumstances and practice history.

In general:

If you have practised as a nurse within the last 5 years

You may be eligible to renew your Annual Practising Certificate (APC). The Nursing Council can provide access to the appropriate application process.

If you have been out of nursing practice for 5 years or more

The Nursing Council will review your circumstances individually. You may be asked to provide information such as your nursing history, current CV, and details of work undertaken since you last practised as a nurse.

Following review, the Nursing Council may determine that additional requirements apply. These may include:

  • Conditions on your scope of practice
  • Completion of a return-to-nursing programme
  • Employer-supported return-to-practice arrangements

Because every situation is different, individual requirements can only be determined by the Nursing Council.

Our role is to help you understand the process, prepare documentation, explore possible pathways, and feel more confident navigating the next steps.

Returning nurses are often unsure where to find accurate information.

We provide guidance to help you understand:

  • APC requirements
  • Recertification expectations
  • Competency requirements
  • Continuing professional development expectations
  • Potential return-to-practice pathways
  • Professional responsibilities

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell me whether I can return to practice?

We can help you understand the relevant requirements and pathways, however decisions regarding registration, APC renewal, and return-to-practice requirements are made by the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

How long can I be away from nursing before I need additional requirements?

This depends on your individual circumstances. During your consultation we can help you understand the relevant Nursing Council guidance and identify potential next steps.

What if my APC has expired?

Many nurses successfully return after a lapse in practice. The first step is understanding your current situation and what requirements may apply.

I feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Is that normal?

Absolutely. Many nurses feel uncertain about returning to practice. Our goal is to help simplify the process and provide supportive, professional guidance.
